About Us
We are a coalition of transit, labor and social justice advocates who seek a better connector between BART and the Oakland Airport. We do not feel that the current Oakland Airport Connector project meet the goals we believe a connector should strive towards. Our goals for a better connector include:
- Fares that BART riders and airport workers can afford: The $6 fare of the OAC is too high for most riders to afford, especially when added to BART fares. Fares should be reasonably low or free, which would be possible with a bus rapid transit project.
- Economic development: The OAC flies over East Oakland without making any stops in between. One or more intermediate stops are critical.
- Cost-effectiveness: A half billion dollar price tag for a ridership increase of just one thousand is simply not cost effective. A bus rapid transit project could be completed for a fraction of the cost, while attracting the same or higher ridership as the OAC.
- Reliability: While the AirBART bus is generally reliable, we share the concerns of BART that reliability may go down in the future if traffic increases. Dedicated lanes, queue jump lanes, multi-door boarding, and signal prioritization could be implemented to assure reliability.
